Australia’s favourite indie darling Bertie Blackman announces a huge national tour following the release of her new album ‘Secrets and Lies’. The tour kicks off in Tasmania, and will see Bertie playing metropolitan and regional shows in NSW, VIC, QLD, SA and WA through July and August.

‘Secrets and Lies’ was launched with an album of the week feature on triple j and a hit single with the track Heart, one of the most downloaded singles of the week ever on iTunes, plus sold out shows in Melbourne and Sydney. Next month will see Bertie take the live show to the rest of the country as she releases her second single, ‘Thump’. Haunting vocals soar, industrial electronics collide and the track troughs into eerie breaths of quiet throughout. For Bertie Blackman, ‘Thump captures that feeling of walking home late at night; your footsteps hit the pavement and your whole body pulsates. You become really aware of your breath and heartbeat.’

‘Thump’ echoes a time when Courtney Love cleaned herself up and produced perfectly dirty pop songs and when the likes of PJ Harvey, Kim Gordon and Kate Bush made musical history. Bertie Blackman’s music isn’t just heaving with 90s rock nostalgia; she fits with the contemporary ilk of Karen O and Beth Ditto of The Gossip too. Like her predecessors, Bertie Blackman gears her song-writing towards powerful vocals: ‘I wanted to write a song that really carried my vocal range; the best way of doing that is jumping octaves really quickly. It’s quite difficult to do, but I’ve never had vocal training - so I just did it.’
Thump was produced by Sydney-based UK producer, Lee Groves (Goldfrapp/Depeche Mode) and mixed by Dave Bascome (Tears for Fears/Royksopp) in the UK.

‘Secrets and Lies’ has received accolades from the Australian media since it’s release in May with Melbourne’s Herald Sun calling it a “huge shot in the arm for smart, strange, subversive, envelope pushing pop”. Sydney’s Daily Telegraph echoes the praise, saying that “Just as it seemed 2009 would be bereft of anything shockingly original, Blackman saves our sonic day……”.

The Thump single will be available in store and online on August 7. The Secret’s and Lies tour kicks off on July 31st in Hobart (see tour details below) with support acts Hungry Kids from Hungary and Kimbra.

where to begin!!!

i dont think my fingers have the energy to type full sentences yet so how bout i just give you some words to appreciate the randomness of this day.
3am wake up. in makeup at 430 am. take water taxi with crew and kimba (my hairdreser) clutching a head with a large cone wig…(ps not for me). the light on the habour is beautiful at 530 am!!!!….wow you guys mebe will get some sentences out of me after all…or not. cockatoo island. an island of deserted industrial structures. concrete. rusty cranes. toxic ocean that the public are not aliowed to swim in. you can camp there, but not swim? thats shit!!!
um, ok…in costume on what looks like a long mine shaft. wind. rain. so hungry! yellow goddess vamp looked amazing. peach dyed sand. mark my manager getting HIS hair cut and riding skate boards. walking 5km to find the bathroom….wolverine world premier being set up at the sam e time as us shooting. amazing ghost hip hop dancers dressed on silver, teal and purple ghost outfits. i looked a bit like a dishelveled island bird. THEN …not scripted….you will all have the pleasure of seeing me dance. hand dances…i have paint on the legs and hands. i did a dance solo…at night…under a huge light….in an old sandstone falling apart building on the top of the mountain. and if you know me at all….i have to be drunk to dance…and even then… it pretting interesting!…but what the hell. i got to dance with the amazing little levi (island boy) who did cute little hip hop moves around me….what a cool kid! maybe my next video will be on skateboards. cool. and last but very not least….the tunnel glitter shower…..how exiting! who doesn’t love a glitter shower!!!!!
